Learning goals for Chapter 9:
The Periodic Table

  1. You understand Mendeleev's (& Meyer's) Periodic Law:  "When the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic mass, certain sets of properties recur periodically."
  2. Given such plots as given in the text (atomic volume/radius, ionization energy, electron affinity) you can explain how to assemble the Periodic Table of the elements in its current form.
  3. You understand that chemical properties (e.g., formation of binary halides or oxides and the properties of those compounds) also fits this grouping.
  4. You understand the historic basis of developing the Periodic Table based on atomic mass; can identify misplaced elements on this basis; and explain why atomic number became a better basis for organization once nuclear structure was better known.
  5. You can use electron configuration as a rational basis for constructing the Periodic Table and identifying periodic relationships.
