Learning goals for Chapter 9:
The Periodic Table
- You understand Mendeleev's (& Meyer's) Periodic Law: "When the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic mass, certain sets of properties recur periodically."
- Given such plots as given in the text (atomic volume/radius, ionization energy, electron affinity) you can explain how to assemble the Periodic Table of the elements in its current form.
- You understand that chemical properties (e.g., formation of binary halides or oxides and the properties of those compounds) also fits this grouping.
- You understand the historic basis of developing the Periodic Table based on atomic mass; can identify misplaced elements on this basis; and explain why atomic number became a better basis for organization once nuclear structure was better known.
- You can use electron configuration as a rational basis for constructing the Periodic Table and identifying periodic relationships.
